A while back, a demonstrator showed a card she received and it became the inspiration for one of my cards in my January Card Class.  The original card was made as a square, but I changed it to be a standard 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" size.  The cool thing about the card was that it was a diagonal easel card that would sit on your desk and display the outside of the card, but also the message on the inside at the same time!

Since everyone at my card class seemed to like it, I decided to made a video showing the concept.  The structure of the card is simple - it has two score lines and a popped up sentiment on the inside to create the easel.  Let's get started!

Gather your supplies:

  • Cardstock: Thick Basic White 4-1/4" x 11"; Basic White 3-1/2" x 4-1/2", 3" x 1-1/4" and 1-1/16" x 1-5/8"; Pear Pizzazz 1-3/16" x 1-3/4"; Rain or Shine Specialty DSP 4" x 5-1/4"
  • Bundle:  Playing in the Rain
  • Dies: Something Fancy
  • Ink:  Basic Gray, Balmy Blue
  • Stampin' Blends: Light Combo, Gray Granite, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight
  • Adhesive and Tools
Score the Thick Basic White at 5-1/2" and use your bone folder along the crease.  Holding the card in a horizontal orientation, you will need to score on the top panel from the upper right corner down to the lower left corner (at the fold).  Fold to make a "mountain" of the top card panel and crease well.

Next, cut the DSP on the diagonal to match your card front.  For the card I made in the video, I positioned the cut triangles right up to the folded crease and adhered them in place.  If you prefer to have a gap along the crease, you will want to change the dimension of the DSP rectangle to 4" x 5-1/8".

Stamp the rabbit in Basic Gray on the large Basic White rectangle  Using the dies, cut out the rabbit and the label using the Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine.  Save the little cutout flower and leaves to use later.  Color the rabbit using Blends.  Before adding the rabbit to the label with Dimensionals, add some blades of grass along the bottom of the label.

Position the label on the front of the card.  Since you only want to adhere the label to the lower triangle, I find it helpful to use a scrap of paper as a guide along the fold.  Pick up the scrap of paper and the label together and adhere Dimensionals on the part of the label that is visible when you turn it over.  Keep them together after you remove the backings to help you reposition the label.  This will ensure you don't have any Dimensionals showing when you pop up the card for display.

The last step is to add your sentiment to the small remaining piece of Basic White using Balmy Blue.  Mat this with the Pear Pizzazz piece and add this to the lower right corner of the inside of the card using more Dimensionals.  Color the flower and leave cutouts with Blends and adhere them on the sentiment piece.

This is the card from my January Class.  I used the Country Bouquet Stamp set along with Dandy Designs DSP and Calypso Coral Cardstock  A few Pearl hearts add a sweet finishing touch.

The Love for You Bundle is another great new set that is great for Valentine's Day and more.  Here I use more of the Dandy Designs DSP (you do know you can get this for FREE during Sale-a-bration, don't you?).  I added an another sentiment on the inside in addition to the "for you" that holds the card popped up.

For my next sample, I changed it up a bit by not having triangles on the card front.  Here, I used a rectangle that is only adhered to the bottom part of the folded card front.  The image is colored with Watercolor Pencils and comes from the In the Country set.  The words are from Charming Sentiments and are perfect for this masculine birthday card.

For my last sample, I thought it would be fun to make the card like my original inspiration - a square.  You need a piece of cardstock that is 4-1/4" x 8-1/2", scored at 4-1/4".  Since I put my triangle pieces of DSP right along the crease, I started with a 4" square from the Favored Flowers DSP.  The bird image is from Eclectic Garden and was cut with the Stylish Shapes dies.

I enjoyed making these cards for you!  I hope you liked seeing more uses for some of the products you can get for free during our Sale-a-bration promotion, as well as some more new products from the mini catalog.  Have fun making your own diagonal easel cards!

Valentine's Day is right around the corner. And while there are some great new stamp bundles in our new catalog that feature hearts and flowers and have a more traditional look to them, we also have a lot of stamps that can be used to make a non-traditional Valentine's Day card.  This is what this video is all about!

When I was playing with my new products, I made a card with the Sea Turtle and used a sentiment from Whale Done (since there are no sentiments in the Sea Turtle set) - it came out super cute!  When I showed it to my daughters, my oldest (Kyra) said I should make this a theme for my video - non-traditional valentines.  There are many people who don't want to send a romantic card, or want to send one to a friend and thus, I've got some great options for you.

 Gather your supplies:

  • Cardstock: Early Espresso 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"; Basic White 5" x 5-1/2", 3" x 1-1/4", 4" x 5-1/4"
  • Stamps:  Nothing's Better Than, Country Bouquet
  • Dies: Love You More Than, Deckled Rectangles
  • Ink:  Early Expresso
  • Stampin' Blends: Deep and Medium Deep Combos
  • Adhesive and Tools
On the large piece of Basic White, we need to cut two deckled rectangles (the third and fourth smallest), as well as stamp and cut out five clusters of chocolates.  I show you how I planned space for the chocolates in the video.  After stamping the chocolates, color them with the Blends - I used 100, 200 and 300 to get different shades.  Using your Stampin' Cut & Emboss machine, cut out the chocolates and rectangles.

On the small piece of white, color the piece from light to dark to make a gradient of color for the word chocolate which will be cut from this piece.  I colored more than half of it light, since the bulk of the letters are near the bottom of the word.  It's a subtle touch that shows up much better in real life than in the video or pictures - I think it's worth the small effort.  Also color around the outside of the largest rectangle with the 300 Blend.  When you add the smaller rectangle on top, you'll have a nice contrasting color that will exactly match the chocolate pieces.  Stamp Today's Plan: Consume in Early Espresso near the top middle of the small rectangle, then adhere the cut out word Chocolate below that.  Mat this with the larger rectangle.

Now you're ready to assemble.  Add Dimensionals to the label and four of the chocolate clusters.  Place them on your card front to get the placement just right before removing the backings.  I had my row of chocolates about 3/4" from the bottom.  When happy with the placement, stick everything down.  For the inside, stamp your Valentine's message and add the last cluster of chocolates.  I stamped and colored another chocolate cluster on my envelope as the final touch.

Here us the Sea Turtle card that started Kyra thinking about this video theme - I think it is so adorable.  I first blended the background panel of white with Blending Brushes, starting with Pacific Point, then Bermuda Bay and ending with Parakeet Party.  I then embossed the panel in white using Hand Drawn Dots.  The turtle is a cool two-sided stamp - one side does the solid color and the other does the detail.  The sentiment and seaweed are from the Whale Done stamp set.  On the inside, I used the sentiment from Love for You.

My girls and their husbands are my technical support around here, so the stamp set, Tech Support, was a must-get purchase for me.  Here, I stamped the 1's and 0's with Basic Gray all over the background, and used the stamps to make this nerdy valentine card.

We have a new embossing folder that looks absolutely amazing when used with foil papers - it's called Metal Plate 3D.  I stamped it on Silver (the one that has a definite deep purple tint) and then matted it with white and popped it up on a Fresh Freesia card base.  I used the He's All That stamp set and All That Dies to make the sentiment, and added some Metallic Mesh ribbon as an accent.

In our last mini catalog, we had a gnome set that came with Gnome Dies.  Well there's a new gnome set called Friendly Gnomes and it uses the same dies!  I chose a lovely paper from the By the Bay 6" DSP to use over the Cane Weave 3D embossed panel of Basic White.  The mushroom house was cut by hand but the gnome was cut with a die.  This would be a perfect card for your bestie!
The last one is my favorite!  I used the Taco Fiesta stamp set to make a circle of peppers.  First, I traced around the outside of my Stylish Shape circle die so I knew where I had to fill with my stamped peppers.  I started stamping in the middle, and just filled the space.  Then I used Blends to color the peppers using Dark Daffodil Delight, Dark Poppy Parade, Dark Pumpkin Pie, Light Granny Apple Green covered with Dark Parakeet Party, and Dark Granny Apple Green for the stems.  The paper is from the Tea Boutique 6" DSP Pack.  I stamped Love You on the inside (from the Thanks a Bunch set) and used the envelope to say Happy Valentine's Day.

Those are some fabulous ideas to get you started!  Which one is your favorite?  I'd love to hear what ideas you come up for your non-traditional Valentine's Day cards.  Don't forget - during Sale-a-bration, you can choose a free item for every $50 of products purchased!
