One Stamp - Multiple Colors

Normally during my videos, I make a card that demonstrates the technique or tool I'm featuring, but this time, I wanted to focus on the many ways you can stamp in multiple colors with a single stamp.  I have six ways to accomplish this and that's why I'm teaching each technique first, then showing the card I make using that technique.  Below, I list all the products used to make all of my card samples - that's why the list is so long!!  Let's dive right in!

Technique 1 - Using sponge daubers to ink your stamp

Start by cutting a large circle using the Stylish Shapes dies and Basic White.  I chose a sentiment from Kindest Expressions and three colors of ink - Granny Apple Green, Coastal Cabana and Azure Afternoon. I like to have a sponge dauber for each color and it's very helpful to label them because after you've used them a while and they are saturated with ink, it's hard to tell the colors apart just by looking at the sponge.

Place the dauber on your finger and dab it into the Coastal Cabana ink to pick up color from the ink pad.  Then dab it onto the middle portion of the stamp - make sure you have a wide enough portion covered so that you can get blending of colors when you add the next two inks.  It can be a little difficult to see the ink on red rubber stamps, but trust the process.  Repeat this step with Granny Apple Green on the top part and Azure Afternoon on the bottom.  Once you have all the colors on your stamp, huff on the stamp.  The moisture from your breath will help liven up the ink to get a nice impression when you stamp it on the circle.

I have one more tip for this card - use the dark Azure Afternoon Stampin' Blend to dot color onto the white Adhesive Backed Glitter Sequins - this way, you'll have embellishments in all three colors. Assembling the card is simple - stamp some confetti from the Year to Celebrate set in matching ink colors to the strips of paper and adhere these to the card front.  Place the circle over top with Stampin' Dimensionals.

Technique 2 - Inking portions of the stamp with the stamp pad

My next card uses the same color scheme and stamps.  Mount the sentiment Happy New Year and ink just the word happy in Granny Apple Green.  Since this is a photopolymer stamp, it's easy to see where the ink is landing.  Stamp the sentiment onto your strip of Basic White.  After cleaning the stamp, this time ink just the word Year in Azure Afternoon.  Align the stamp with the previously stamped happy to get the last portion of the sentiment.  Again, clean your stamp and then add a post-it note to cover the word Year.  Ink just the word New in Coastal Cabana - you'll get ink on the post-it note too.and that's ok.  Remove the post-it note and stamp again to complete your sentiment.  Because this is a photo polymer stamp, it's easy to get the alignment just right.  If you wanted to do this technique with a red rubber stamp, you'd need to use a stamp positioning tool to get perfect alignment.

I used the stamps from the Year to Celebrate to decorate the card front - it was a lot of fussy cutting of the party blowers, but the result is super cute.  For the inside, I used the die cut word Celebrate.  While it isn't stamping in multiple colors, I used a Blending Brush to add the same three colors to keep it with the theme of the card.  I started with Coastal Cabana in the middle and then blended the remaining two colors from the ends.

Technique 3 - Inking with ink pad, then add additional colors with daubers

This a great technique when you have large stamps that can show off the multiple colors of ink, like leaves, flowers, or other botanicals.  I chose the leaf from the Hello Ladybug stamp and four colors of green - Lemon Lime Twist, Granny Apple Green, Garden Green and Shaded Spruce.  Begin by inking the stamp in the lightest color using the stamp pad.  Then use daubers to add additional colors to the stamp.  I usually start by adding the next darker color to the veins and stem, followed by a third darker color.  There is no set way to add colors - just play around!  Just like we did in the first technique, huff on the stamp before stamping it on the paper.

For my card, I made four different color variations of leaf, then cut them out and sprinkled them down the side of my Crumb Cake card base.  While the stamp set is cute and whimsical, I chose a sentiment from Very Best Occasions to make this a sympathy card.  I love using stamps from a set in different ways from their "intended" purpose - it makes them so much more useful!

Technique 4 - Inking a sentiment in two different colors, then cutting out one word to add it on top

My sentiment from the Share a Milkshake set could have been inked with Technique 2, but I wanted to show an alternative method.  Start by stamping the sentiment in Pecan Pie ink onto a circle.  On a scrap of white, ink the sentiment again in Real Red.  Cut out the word Cherry and add this on top of the Pecan Pie stamped sentiment using Mini Stampin' Dimensionals.

Technique 5 - Inking with Stampin' Write Markers

On the same card, I wanted to have the stem of my cherry be brown rather than red.  I inked just the cherry in Real Red (like we did in Technique 2), then added brown to the stem with the brush tip end of my Early Espresso Stampin' Write marker.  Again, I huffed on the stamp before stamping.  You can use Stampin' Write markers to color any stamp, but it usually works better on line images rather than solid stamps.  I prefer using stamp pads to ink because the coverage is much better, but markers are a fun way to get many colors on a single stamp.  Note - you cannot use Stampin' Blends for this technique.

The card was completed using Bubble Bath, Real Red, Pecan Pie and Basic White cardstock, along with the Holographic Trio DSP and the Share a Milkshake Bundle.  The ribbon is from the 3/8" Sheer Ribbon Combo Pack.  I really love how this card came out!

Technique 6 - Inking with multiple stamp pads

This last technique will yield distinct, hard color changes from one color to another (unlike the dauber method which gives blended color shifts).  For my sample, I used the sentiment from Good Feelings and Daffodil Delight, Berry Burst and Azure Afternoon stamp pads.  Start by inking the entire stamp in the lightest color (Daffodil Delight).  Next, add Berry Burst by placing the stamp pad diagonally over just the top portion of the stamp.  Just place the stamp pad onto the stamp - do not move it around.  Repeat on the opposite corner with Azure Afternoon.  Then stamp on Basic White.  You will notice the colors are a blend of the inks - the Berry Burst blended with Daffodil Delight and the result is an orange-red color, while the Azure Afternoon and Daffodil Delight together are green.  This means that you need to be cognizant of how your colors will mix when adding one on top of another.

It is important to always start with your lightest color.  Also note that you will transfer this initial color to the ink pads of the additional colors.  Because they are darker, it really isn't an issue unless you do this over and over again.  If you didn't want three colors for the sentiment, it would be easy just to ink half of the sentiment in one color, then add ink to the second color without much overlap.

The Rays of Light background stamp provide the perfect finish to my colorful sentiment, which I matted in Basic Black.  A few Classic Matte Dots are all that is needed to complete this card of encouragement.

I hope you liked the focus on the techniques rather than making a single card in the video.  The cards are simple enough that I think you can figure out how to make them, but if you have any questions about how they go together, please reach out to me.  Happy colorizing!!
