Brights and the Happiest Day

Stampin' Up! has four color families (and two sets of In Colors) and by far, my favorite is Brights!  I just love the happy colors and they are my go-to set of papers and inks.  I am pairing them (and the 6" x 6" DSP pack specifically) with the Happiest Day stamp set to make some great cards in this video.  Not only do they look fabulous (the DSP does most of the heavy lifting), but the layouts are simple to replicate and are fantastic for beginners, or anyone who wants to make cards quickly.

 Gather your supplies:

  • Cardstock: Poppy Parade  8-1/2" x 5-1/2"; Basic White 4" x 5-1/4", 2-1/4" x 3-1/4"; Brights 6" x 6"  DSP 4" x 6"
  • Stamp Set:  Happiest Day
  • Dies: Nested Essentials
  • Ink:  Daffodil Delight, Memento Black
  • Ribbon: Baker's Twine Essentials (black) 24"
  • Adhesive and Tools
Fold the card base in half and crease with a bone folder.  From the smaller piece of Basic White, cut out the largest banner from the Nested Essentials dies.  Stamp the birthday sentiment in black and stamp the sun and rays in Daffodil Delight.  (FYI - the other card I show in this layout, uses a base of Granny Apple Green with Lemon Lime Twist DSP.)

Cut off 3/4" from the short side of the DSP, keeping this for the inside of the card.  Wrap the black Baker's Twine around the DSP panel about an inch or so from the top and secure with Seal.  Then attach this to the card front and pop up the banner toward the top right corner.

For the inside, add the 3/4" strip of DSP to the bottom of the Basic White panel, stamp the You're the Best sentiment in black and another sun in Daffodil Delight.  Adhere this to the inside of the card and finish by adding some suns along the left side of the envelope.  Easy and just so adorable!

My next card features the Melon Mambo color.  Cut three strips that measure 1-1/4" x 4" of the leafy design.  Arrange them at slightly varying angels onto the card front and top them with a sentiment stamped on a 1/2" strip (banner ends are optional).  Finish off with the addition of Iridescent Faceted Gems.

For the next example, cut 1-1/2" squares from each of the four pattens of Pumpkin Pie DSP.  Arrange these on top of an embossed panel (I used the Cane Weave 3D embossing folder).  Punch out a circle from Basic White and stamp the sentiment in Memento Black.  Add the line/dots stamp as shown.  Finish by adding a butterfly that is fussy cut (and made shiny with packing tape - check out this video to learn how).

While this next card has a base of Crumb Cake, all of the rainbows are stamped in the brights inks.  There are only three rings of the rainbow, so I just used a variety of colors to make the row of rainbows on a strip of Basic White.  I backed it with a 1-1/4" strip of Coastal Cabana.  Instead of adding a rectangle of white on the inside, I just stamped my birthday sentiment in black and added another rainbow onto a Heartfelt Hexagon punched shape.  It really makes the rainbows pop!

Azure Afternoon pairs so well with Melon Mambo as you can see here.  The DSP is 3-3/4" x 5" and matted with a 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" solid Azure Afternoon.  Like my first card, I used the largest banner from the Nested Essentials dies.  After stamping my sentiment, I tied a knot with the Iridescent Striped Trim and added those Iridescent Faceted Gems again.

Stamp a series of butterflies down a 2-1/4" strip of Basic White and color the wings in Poppy Parade, Pumpkin Pie and Daffodil Delight.  Add this panel to the side of the card base of Basic Black.  Add 1/4" DSP strips of the the same three colors next to the butterflies and pop up the sentiment stamped in black on a white rectangle.  Add three more strips of DSP to the inside white panel and add a butterfly to the envelope.

For my last card, I just used solid cardstock in the primary colors.  I cut the two smallest rounded rectangles from the Nested Essentials dies in Daffodil Delight, Poppy Parade and Azure Afternoon.  On the largest of each color, I stamped in the same color with the stars stamp.  I positioned the die cut pieces all over the front of a 3-3/4" x 5" Basic White rectangle, then popped up my sentiment which was stamped in black on the smallest rounded rectangle cut from Basic White.  I colored the Black & Very Vanilla Large Checked ribbon with my Daffodil Delight Stampin' Blend and added this to the corner of the sentiment.  I masked off the bottom edge of the inside panel, as well as the left side of the envelope to stamp the stars in all three colors.

This stamp set is great for new stampers.  If you add an assortment pack of one color family and the 6" x 6" DSP pack, I think you will find there are lots of options to make lots of fabulous cards, especially if you use the layouts I've shown here or from page 22 of the annual catalog.  If you want to step it up, consider adding some embellishments like gems or ribbons, or even dies and embossing folders.  Have fun!

Pocket Thoughts and More

This is a bundle I didn't really notice in the new catalog, and I've looked through the catalog so many times since I first got it in March!  I wanted to make this video to especially showcase the versatility of the dies - they make three sizes of pockets.  Of course, they can be used with the stamp set, but work with so many other sets too.  At this time of year, there are lots of graduations and weddings, so using the middle sized pocket for cards that can hold gift cards, cash or checks is perfect.  Of course, we can use gift cards all year long for birthdays, celebrations, Christmas and other holidays.  The other two sizes are also fun and I wanted to show you some cards to inspire you to give this bundle a try.

One of the things I learned from making my samples is that pockets made with DSP are a bit easier than cardstock.  While cardstock works perfectly well, the thinner patterned paper just creases a little better and the pocket lies flatter on your card.  Another thing I found is that I really liked it when I could find three sentiments that worked well together - one for the card front, one for the inside of the pocket and one more for the inside of the card.  For that reason, I loved using Hooray for Surprises.

Here are the measurements I recommend as a guide for the inside pocket pieces:

  • 3-1/2" x 4-3/4"
  • 2-1/4" x 3-1/4"
  • 1-1/4" x 2"

These are just starting points and your pieces can be slightly different, depending on how you want the pocket to appear.  I like a little wiggle room, so I've left a little more space width-wise.  Also, if you use another die to slip into the pocket, your dimensions will be slightly different.

Gather your supplies:

  • Cardstock: Petunia Pop  8-1/2" x 5-1/2"; Basic White (2) 4" x 5-1/4", 2-1/4" x 2-1/2", 1-1/4" x 2-1/16", 3/4" x 4"; Thoughtful Journey DSP 1-1/4" x 2-1/16"
  • Stamp Bundle: Pocket Thoughts
  • Stamp Set:  Labeled with Love
  • Dies: Perennial Postage
  • Ink:  Petunia Pop, Bubble Bath, Granny Apple Green, Memento Black
  • Embossing Folder:  Distressed Tile 3D
  • Ribbon: Petunia Pop Bordered Ribbon 6", Baker's Twine Essentials (White) 8"
  • Embellishment: Iridescent Pearls
  • Adhesive and Tools
Begin by cutting out the smallest pocket in Basic White and the postage die in the DSP.  Stamp the leaves in Granny Apple Green on the pocket with the stems going below the score line.  Add the flowers in Bubble Bath.  Stamp the sentiment on the piece of DSP with Black ink, then mat it with the small Basic White rectangle.  Fold along the score lines of the pocket and set these pieces aside.  FYI - here's the link for how I changed my Memento ink pad.

Stamp Happy Birthday in Petunia Pop ink onto the large Basic White panel.  This needs to be about 1-1/4" from the bottom and 1/2" from the left side.  Then do partial embossing of this panel on both the top and bottom.  As I show in the video, place the panel into the embossing folder so that the bottom is just above the sentiment (the panel will stick out of the embossing folder).  Flip the panel around and repeat for the bottom of the panel.  The result will be a smooth portion where the sentiment is and texture everywhere else.  Adhere this to card base of Petunia Pop (which you've folded in half and creased with the bone folder).

Adhere the pocket to the right of the sentiment.  I used glue on this sample, but I also used Tear & Tape, which does a great job too.  Use the hole die to make the opening on the inside pocket piece.  Thread the Petunia Pop ribbon through the hole and use the Baker's Twine to tie a bow as I demonstrate.  Tuck this into the pocket.

Emboss the strip of Basic White and adhere it to the bottom of the other Basic White panel.  Stamp your sentiment and add this to the inside of the card.  For the envelope, stamp more flowers/leaves in the lower left corner.

For my next card, I used the medium sized pocket and used two of them.  The Bright & Beautiful DSP is a great complement to the stamps in the Pocket Thoughts.  I tucked a message into one pocket and a gift card into the other.  I don't think I've ever made a pocket card with more than one pocket before and I think it's a fun twist!

My next one is a graduation card for my great nephew.  I stamped the diploma and colored it with blends before fussy cutting it.  The sentiment is from Filled with Fun and the paper is the Regals 6" x 6" DSP (Blueberry Bushel).  This is the perfect way to tuck in a little bit of cash.
Switching over to the largest pocket, I wanted to use the stamps in the Pocket Thoughts a differently.  Instead of making wedding rings, I used the two stamps to make a background pattern all over the pocket.  I chose Summer Splash and Azure Afternoon.  As I mentioned earlier, the Hooray for Suprises is a great set to use for three coordinating sentiments.  It also has the word Pull, which I like for the inside piece.  I used the In-Color Glimmer paper to really jazz up the pocket, the inside piece and the envelope.

For this next card, I used Thoughtful Designs Specialty DSP for the pocket and the pull tab for the inside panel.  I used the Flowering Zinnias for the background piece and fussy cut flowers.  I stamped the images from Simply Zinnia on the inside of the card, envelope and pocket interior and used Petal Pink and Melon Mambo inks.

My last card card is not a card that opens at all!  It's a quarter sheet of Thick Basic White, which I covered in a panel of Regals 6" DSP (Old Olive).  I used the Cheerful Daisies Bundle for the flowers and leaves cut or stamped in Daffodil Delight, Crushed Curry and Old Olive. The middle of the flowers are colored with the Pecan Pie Stampin' Blend.  The sentiments are from Hooray for Surprises (I told you I loved this one!) and the embellishments are the Iridescent Foil Gems.

So take a look at page 62 in the catalog to see this bundle you may have skimmed over.  I think you'll agree with me that the pockets will be useful for so many gift giving occasions!
