By now, you all know I like adding dimension to my cards. Usually, I do this by adding dimensionals and layers. In today's video, I show you another way - stacking die cuts or punched shapes. By stacking three, four or more layers together, the end result is a chipboard-like element on your card. The dimension you get from this technique is different from others - it adds depth and shadows only a solid thick piece can provide.
Gather your supplies:
- Cardstock: Thick Basic White 4-1/4" x 11"; Crumb Cake (or Sahara Sand) 3-3/8" x 5-1/2"; Basic White 3-3/4" x 8-1/2" and 1/2" strip (at least 11" long)
- Stamp Sets: Positive Thoughts, Artistically Inked
- Ink: Evening Evergreen
- Checks and Dots Embossing Folder
- Nature's Thoughts Dies
- Linen Thread 44"
- Adhesive and Tools
Score your card base at 5-1/2" and crease with the bone folder. Emboss the panel of crumb cake with the dots embossing folder. Trim off three rows of dots and adhere these two panels to your card front, leaving about 1/4" from each side. This will give you a small gap in the middle.
On the white panel, stamp the greenery image at one end. Cut this out with the die, then cut three more plain ones. Glue all four layers together. The glue is great for this as it gives you the wiggle room to align them perfectly! Place this element (which now looks like you cut it out of chipboard) onto the card front as shown.
On your strip of white, stamp your sentiment. Trim to size and layer three more pieces (slightly shorter and a little narrower if desired) to the underside. Glue this to your card front. Lastly, tie a bow with the linen thread. Wasn't this a quick and easy card to make? And it's great for the guys in our lives.
This next example is super quick to make. I used paper from the Hand-Penned DSP pack in a subtle pattern and Mint Macaron as the base. I then layered two leaves/flowers cut from the Layering Hugs dies in white, topped with three HUGS. I especially love the letters and how they stand out. And this is way easier than trying to raise the letters with dimensionals!
My next one is made with a So Saffron base and a panel cut with the Scalloped Contours dies and paper from Pansy Petals DSP. The flower and sentiment are from Color & Contour. I stacked four layers of flowers. Then for the sentiment, I stacked four layers of a square just a little narrower than the width of the sentiment and added it to each end of the sentiment. This allowed the sentiment to be one layer thicker than the flower and rest over the stem without having a bump.
Hey Birthday Chick and Birthday Chick dies are featured in my next sample. I used Polished pink (and the Scalloped Contours dies) for my panel. I colored my chick with blends and used the new Adorning Designs Decorative Masks and Blending Brushes to color a light Daffodil Delight background pattern.
The All Squared Away Bundle is the star of the show for my next card. I stamped the background square in Granny Apple Green, then added four layers of the flower die cut on top. This was layered on a larger square of Granny Apple Green, then placed on a panel from the Brights 6" x 6" DSP pack. I stamped my sentiment in Stazon ink and tied a bow around the panel with the Crinkled Seam Binding ribbon. I added a layer of white before mounting this to the card base.
My last card features the Penguin Place Bundle - a new favorite from our July-December Mini catalog (released August, so it's still pretty new!). I used the amazing Pattern Party DSP that is only available to hostesses (don't you want to host a class or workshop so you can get this???). I then glued two pieces of basic white together and cut them to resemble a snow bank. I added a few lines with my Stampin' Write marker to represent snow banks. I stamped the penguin with Stazon (it gives such an intense depth to the black ink) and punched out three additional shapes. Then I punched two more partial head pieces to accommodate for the extra thickness needed to balance out with the snow. I also layered two pieces each for his feet. The sentiment is also four layers thick.
Stacking due cuts or punches is easy when you use glue. It truly gives a different look and makes your card un-squishable (a really nice feature when you have to mail your cards). I hope you give it a try!
