Basic Borders Dies and a Fun Fold

If you've watched my videos for a while, you know that I love dies!  The Basics Borders Dies are a set of six dies that will cut a six inch swath of paper.  Of course, the obvious use would be for a decorative edge at the bottom of a card, or perhaps along a strip of paper.  But believe me, they can be used in many other ways!  I'll be demonstrating a fun fold with one of the dies, but have card samples using all the others too.  I think you just might be surprised at the different ways to use these remarkable dies.  And there are two more fun folds in these samples!!

Gather your supplies:

  • Cardstock:  Thick Basic White 8-1/2" x 4-1/4"; Basic White 1/2" strip; Basic Black 2-1/2" square and a 3/4" strip; Zoo Crew DSP 3" x 4" (mostly black), 2-3/4" x 4" (mostly white) and one of the animals that can be cut with the die in the bundle
  • Stamp Bundle:  Zany Zoo
  • Ink:  Pool Party, Memento Black
  • Die:  Basic Borders
  • Punch:  Decorative Circle
  • Ribbon: Pool Party Grosgrain 14"
  • Adhesive and Tools

To begin making this fun fold, score the Thick Basic White at 3" and fold the flap over.  You will need to cut the edge of this folded over piece with the scalloped die - place the die close to the edge and center it from side to side.  Do the same thing with the smaller piece of DSP and while you are cutting, cut out one of the animals (I love the ballerina and she fits so well in our punched shape).

Adhere the mostly black piece of DSP to the right side and the mostly white piece to the flap.  Stamp the sentiment with Pool Party ink on the inside under the flap and tie the ribbon in a knot around the flap with the Pool Party Grosgrain ribbon.  The knot can be either at the bottom like I show in the video, or at the top as you see to the sample on the left.

Since the decorative circle holds down the flap, it has to be popped up with Dimensionals and the positioning has to be just so.  You want enough overlap to hold the flap down, but not too much so that it hard to open and re-tuck.  Place three Dimensionals along an imaginary vertical line that is just to the right of the flap when tucked.  Pop up the ballerina and add to the punch.

To finish, stamp the sentiment on the strip of Basic White and trim to fit.  Add this to the Basic Black strip and again, trim to fit.  Pop this sentiment over the ribbon.  Add some music notes or confetti down the side of the envelop and you're all set!

My first sample uses the zig zag in a traditional way - as a strip along the edge of DSP.  When I cut this strip, I cut a wider piece of Basic Black and placed the die down the middle.  This way, after I was done cutting, I had two borders and could quickly make a second card.  There are two sneak peaks with this card - the bear is from the Fluffiest Friends, coming out on November 7th as an on-line exclusive.  The DSP and sentiment are from a new bundle coming in January (so exciting!).

This next card is a fun fold of sorts.  I started with a piece of Basic White that was 4" x 5-1/4".  I angled the cloud die to make the first cut.  Then with the top remaining portion, I changed the position of the die to a slightly different angle so that the clouds looked different from the lower layer.  I adhered them together and placed them on the layer of Coastal Cabana, which was mounted on a Lemon Lolly card base.  The Fluffiest Friends Bundle provided the adorable bird in the nest and the insert was colored lightly with Blending Brushes.  The sentiments are from Happy Labels and Sentimental Park.

I love making cards with strips of colors.  Not only is this a good way to use up scraps of cardstock, but it is easy and so attractive!  Here's a different take on that concept - cut the strips with the fancy zig zag die and layer them on top of one another.  Just like I did with the honey bear card, I cut the strips wider (about 3") so that I had both halves after cutting down the middle.  I used the Gorgeously Made Bundle for the branch and sentiment strip and the colors are Calypso Coral, Daffodil Delight, Parakeet Party, Azure Afternoon and Gorgeous Grape.

To make this adorable card, start with a 3-1/2" x 5" piece of DSP (Glorious Gingham) and use the banner die to cut the paper about 2/3 of the width.  Pop the two pieces up on a Basic Gray card base.  Add a cat from the Fluffiest Friends Bundle (can you tell I love this new bundle??) and a sentiment form the So Sincere stamp set (the vertical orientation is perfect for this layout!).  And if you turn the card sideways, the piece the cat is on looks like a pocket - that would also make a fun card layout.

My last card is another fun fold and really shows off the beautiful paper from the Joy of Christmas DSP pack.  To make the DSP layer, start with a 4-1/4" x 11" piece and score at 3', 7", and 9-1/4".  Using the curved die, cut off about 1/2" from the left side, but save this piece as you can use it to decorate the inside panel of white (3-3/4" x 5").  After folding the DSP, tie it closed with a coordinating ribbon (I used the Ribbon Duo Combo), then adhere it to a 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" piece of Shaded Spruce.  Use the Joy of Noel and Christmas Classics to stamp a sentiment and adhere this to the front flap (make sure you only place glue on the part that rests on the red flap, or your card won't open!

I had a lot of fun making these samples for you.  I hope you give the border dies a try - they are both fun and versatile!
